The Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum
Castle House in Dedham Vale is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, at the heart of 'Constable Country'. The Collection of paintings and sculptures contained within the house are an ongoing celebration of the life and work of the Artist Sir Alfred Munnings, KVCO, PRA, who lived at this unique setting for over 40 years from 1919 until his death in 1959. He called it 'the house of my dreams'.
Famous for his racehorse and equestrian paintings, many consider his best works were prior to this period, when between 1898 and 1920 he recorded the English rural scene, particularly East Anglia.
Castle House dates from the Tudor and Georgian periods. The interior retains Sir Alfred and Lady Munnings' original furnishings and visitors can experience the atmosphere of their lives at Castle House.
The house stands in spacious grounds with well maintained gardens which visitors are welcome to walk around or you may wish to site and take in the sights while enjoying some light refreshment from the recently opened Tea Room.
Also in the grounds is Sir Alfred's studio where he painted some of his most famous pictures and where many of his original working materials are displayed.
A considerable number of paintings have been purchased by the Trust in order to make the collection representative of Munnings' life span of work. The Museum prides itself on the diversity of paintings and sculptures on view for visitors to enjoy.
