Sutton Pottery is a small studio workshop in rural east Norfolk, established by Malcolm Flatman in 1977 in the Broadland village of Sutton, near Stalham. He uses the Potter's Wheel and the fire of a gas kiln to create a large range of 'reduction' stoneware entirely by hand.
The Pottery is best accessed from the A149 south of Stalham, by following a succession for official signs through Sutton village. A small car park is adjacent tot he workshop and roadside (grass) parking is available.
The open plan workshop allows visitors to see work in progress, learn about the many stages of production and purchase from a selection of the finished pottery. It is wheelchair accessible via a ramped entrance, but space is generally rather limited.
Malcolm is happy to discuss his work and methods of pot making. He has developed an assortment of practical, repeatable, replaceable and affordable tableware and kitchenware in a wide variety of glaze colours which he blends himself in the interests of consistency. The product is dishwasher safe and microwave proof.
Malcolm also produces a multitude of more decorative pieces, including house name plates and other commissions and some distinctive lamps. He also enjoys the challenge of making orders to customers' own ideas. The pottery carries the potter's distinctive 'windmill' symbol.
For those wishing to learn the basics of 'throwing', or to improve their skills, Malcolm offers intensive tuition in 3 hour pre booked lessons, either on summer weekday evenings or winter weekdays and some Saturdays. Please phone or email for further information.
