Dating from 1076, this Norman Castle, one of the first stone castles in England, saw action only once, in 1216, when King John besieged it and captured it from French Mercenary troops sent to aid his rebellious barons.

During its long history it has also been the County and Town Gaol. Today the Castle, in Castle Park just off the High Street, is home to the multi award-winning Colchester Castle Museum and welcomes more than 100,000 visitors a year.
