Flitwick Wood

High Street,
MK45 1DU

There has been a settlement at Flitwick since Saxon times and history records a Roman settlement and in the Doomsday Book a moated castle, a stone church nearby and a Mill. In the 19th Century the railway was extended from Luton to Bedford and the new railway station at Flitwick became a focal point leading to a growth in industry and commerce. With easy road and rail access, Flitwick grew from a small village into the busy town we now know. Local natural attractions include Flitwick Wood, an ancient woodland, and Flitwick Moor where in past times peat was cut and Flitwick spring water was extracted and bottled locally. The heraldic shield represents the arms of David Rufus de Flitwick, a feudal lord, after whom the Rufus Centre - the headquarters of Flitwick Town Council - was named. The Rufus Centre is also home to fifteen small businesses, a playgroup, community room and youth wing and has available many rooms for conference, meeting and event use. Events such as, Flitwick and District Arts Festival, orchestral concerts, craft fayres, tea dances, quizzes and activities focused on young people. For today's residents there are essential shopping facilities, a leisure centre, a village hall, lower and middle schools, a very busy library, parks and playgrounds for local children including a new and very popular skatepark. The Town Council has aspirations for environmental enhancements in the town centre adding to its planting schemes, street lighting improvements, bus shelter provision, allotments and hedge and tree preservation.
