Norfolk Broads School Of Sailing

The Norfolk Broads School of Sailing is the RYA Training Centre at Upton Yacht Station and provides sailing instruction, ranging from brief introductions for experienced sailors to full RYA courses.

The range of formal RYA courses which the school provides includes a Start Sailing course for beginners, which can be taken over a short break aboard one of the simpler yachts from the Upton fleet. The Basic Skills module is the next step and can be added to the Start Sailing module on a full week course. Experienced sailors, even those who have previously sailed on the Broads, can learn and develop new skills on the more advanced yachts with Passage Making and Seamanship courses. All these courses are extensively practical, including an element covering specific Broads sailing skills, and are run under the authority of the Royal Yachting Association. Successful candidates will receive the appropriate certificates.

A weekend Pre-flotilla course is available. This course will build confidence for handling a small yacht on one of the popular Mediterranean flotillas. Basic sailing skills are included together with navigation, chart work and meteorology.

Through all the courses you will cruise along the rivers and Broads, meeting your instructor each morning at a different place. Our instructors all have formal RYA qualifications as well as many years of Broads sailing experience and they can tell you all about the history of sailing on the Broads, giving guidance on the best places to visit and talking about the wildlife. Most courses are run at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time for free sailing and enjoying the Broads experience.

Seasonal opening: 1 April to 31 October – Daily 10.00am to 5.00pm.

Short breaks available; parking available; tuition available; Skippered sailing available. All of the fleet have: Bedding provided; heating provided; children welcome; cooking facilities; toilet on board. Some of the fleet have: shower onboard.
