A private collection of memorabilia displaying and preserving the story of the 447th Bombardment Group
The 447th Bombardment Group Heritage Gallery is a private collection of memorabilia displaying and preserving the story of the 447th Bombardment Group, and is located within the Lower Watch Office room of the original WW2 Control Tower at the former USAAF Station 126, Rattlesden.
The 447th Bombardment Group were stationed at Rattlesden from November 1943 to July 1945. Flying Boeing B-17G ‘Flying Fortress’ heavy bombers, the group completed 258 missions over occupied Europe. 97 aircraft were lost to enemy action, 455 men paid the ultimate sacrifice, and a further 541 were captured as Prisoners Of War. The 447th Bombardment Group Heritage Gallery is curated to honour their sacrifice, and a continue the legacy of their fight in the cause of freedom.
