Baylham and Beyond Walking Route

Enjoy a picnic before embarking on this riverside walk along the banks of the River Gipping with it’s 18th century Mill at Baylham then on past the mysteriously named Devil’s Grove wood.

This walk follows the lovely River Gipping, with its darting kingfishers and gentle flows. The picnic site at the start of the walk was the location of Bosmere and Claydon Union Workhouse, thought to be the same workhouse Charles Dickens based his classic novel Oliver Twist on. At Barham Pits many fossil remains from the last ice age have been unearthed including Mammoth, rhinocerous and elk. End your walk at the mysteriously named Devil’s Grove.

Directions to start: Barham picnic site is located off junction 52 of the A14 just north of Claydon.
