Lying beside an old Roman road, Haverhill’s market dates from 1222. Fire destroyed many of the older buildings in 1665 – although ‘Anne of Cleves House’, reputedly built in 1540 by Henry VIII as his marriage settlement to her has been restored. The town thrived through its textile industry in the 19th C. Arts centre and annual festival.
