An inn has operated on the Maids Head site since the 13th century and the original inn was called the Molde Fish or Murtel Fish Tavern. The name the Maids Head, gets its first public mention on 22 November 1472 in a Paston Letter, when John Paston recommends the inn as a good place to stable your horse. The Maids Head has had a long history of looking after visitors and local people including the Black Prince who was entertained by the people of Norwich when he visited in 1350 and Queen Katherine of Aragon visited in 1519.
