Description

Wind power has powered the Broads for centuries. Windmills, wind pumps , sail boats can still be seen throughout the Broads. Boats powered by sail were used by the Romans and Vikings. Specialised Broads craft such as the Norfolk Keel and Wherry have left their mark on the Broads.
What of the future? The first electricity generating wind turbines in Norfolk were situated in the Broads landscape and not far from our Museum.
It seemed appropriate to look at the impact of wind on the Broads landscape, its social history and its economy, particularly in the wider context of the contemporary need to increase our use of green energy – including through wind turbines.

Our exhibition “From Sails to Blades – How wind power shaped the Broads” will tell that story and its a fascinating one

Enjoy this exhibition and the other stories we tell throughout the museum bringing the stories of the Broads alive. We cover ALL the heritage of the landscape, wildlife, people, industry, impact of war, holidays, transport of course boats.
We look forward to seeing you in 2022.’
