Description

Walk along gentle trails through the open marshland landscape and alongside the River Yare. In winter, you can see tens of thousands of wigeon, teal, lapwings and golden plovers as they feed and flock over the marshes. In spring you can listen to the yodelling calls of lapwings and watch the tumbling aerial displays of courting lapwings.

Buckenham marshes is an ideal place to watch for birds of prey, including barn owls, marsh harriers, kestrels and peregrine falcons. Look out for hares, stoats and Chinese water deer in the surrounding fields.

There are no toilets or visitor facilities at Buckenham Marshes, but there is one viewing hide near the river. Visitor facilities and toilets are available at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen reserve, just 15 minutes walk from Buckenham.

There are a small number of weekend train stops at Buckenham train station, adjacent to Buckenham Marshes. The reserve car park is at the train station and disabled parking is available at the viewing hide.
