The Great House Restaurant and Hotel

Situated in the historic market place of Lavenham, The Great House was built in the heyday of the wool trade but was extensively renovated in the 18th century and looks more Georgian than Tudor. It was a private house until Regis and Martine Crepy turned it into a ‘Boutique’ hotel with restaurant in 1985. The food (predominantly French) is the best for miles – ‘stunningly good’ enthuses one visitor (a fellow hotelier).

Our philosophy about food: ‘Colour, balance and contrast. Honest flavours that truly express the ingredients. Simple, traditional cooking with a modern approach. Food does not need to be an expression of fashion but, rather, a tasteful and unpretentious expression of flavours, characterised by the availability of seasonal ingredients’.

Our environmental policy is to serve food of the highest quality that is fresh, in season and as local as possible. All our shellfish and fish are from sustainable provenance. Our menu changes every day according to deliveries.

In summer French doors open onto a pretty stone-paved courtyard for drinks, lunch or dinner.

The old timber-framed houses, the fine Perpendicular ‘Wool Church’ and the high street full of antiques and galleries make Lavenham a high point of any visitor’s itinerary of the pretty villages of East Anglia.
