John and Kelly Spencer provide a welcoming atmosphere at The Oliver Twist Country Inn in Guyhirn – situated between the three major towns of Wisbech, Peterborough and March. John has been a chef for some 20 years, and trained in some of the finest restaurants across the country before becoming a head chef in his own right. Kelly joined the ranks in 2006 as John’s front of house manager, and after re-establishing a country pub together in Leicester, they both moved to Guyhirn in 2008 to take on The Oliver Twist.

The team of chefs are trained in the art of traditional cuisine and the main focus is on quality. John and Kelly strive to use only the best quality, locally sourced ingredients – and where possible, free-range produce. The restaurant is currently using pedigree Gloucester Old Spots from the Pig Pad at Ramsey Heights – for everything from traditional breakfast sausages to the more mouth-watering à la carte dishes. Prime steaks and other beef dishes are prepared using free-range Longhorn cattle reared at Spinney Abbey in Wicken Fen.

The eagerness to keep the traditional pub feel alive is obvious, and The Oliver Twist offers a traditional Sunday roast with a couple of alternatives to appeal to a varied customer base. The inn offers a dessert menu to be proud of, boasting a variety of homemade puddings, from the traditional to the tempting. The great food is also matched by the quality drinks available. John has been passionate about keeping real ales for the past ten years and has won the ‘Masters of Beer’ award – the highest award given by Everards Brewery. The varied wine menu is dictated by the ever changing economy, and to ensure affordable quality, features a variety of wines from all over the world.
