Visit Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears’ home, garden and archive on the Suffolk coast
“I want my music to be of use to people, to please them, to ‘enhance their lives’.” Britten, 1964
Benjamin Britten was one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. He wrote a huge amount of incredible music and wanted everyone to enjoy it.
He was born in 1913 and raised in Lowestoft, and Suffolk was the backdrop for nearly his entire life. At The Red House in Aldeburgh, he lived with Peter Pears, his inspiration and life partner, for nearly two decades until his death in 1976.
Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears’ home in Aldeburgh offers a charming snapshot into the two men’s lives. The farmhouse, nestled in a beautiful five-acre garden, is home to their collections and archive, alongside a gallery space, museum shop and outdoor café.
What’s here and what’s on
The Red House
The house itself is a Grade II 17th-century farmhouse. The interior provides an accurate picture of their life together – telling not only their story but also that of the family, friends and famous guests who stayed or visited there.
Garden
Britten and Pears entertained guests, grew vegetables and played croquet and tennis in their garden. Today it has evolved into a wildlife-friendly environment that reflects their taste in flowers and plants. Enjoy a picnic, game of croquet, or a quiet moment in this tranquil space.
Composition Studio
The creative heart of the site where Britten composed works that include Noye’s Fludde, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and War Requiem.
Library
A beautiful, evocative space where Britten and Pears rehearsed and entertained. A programme of recitals takes place throughout the year.
Families
Family-friendly trails and activities to enjoy during school holidays. Plus, Friday morning Mini Music Makers sessions for 0-5 year olds.
Spiritual Britten Exhibition
This year’s exhibition explores the spiritual aspects of Britten’s life and music. Benjamin Britten was born on St Cecilia’s Day, the patron saint of music. Music was his gift, vocation, and part of his identity.
The Spiritual Britten exhibition looks at the defining moments and works that illustrate his motivations as a composer: his passions and the beliefs that shaped him and the works he created.
