Tying in with the Britten Weekend at Snape Maltings we are holding an exhibition focussing on Britten’s relationship with all things Russian. Britten became a keen Russiaphile in the 1960s, partly as a result of his close friendship with Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, soprano Galina Vishnevskaya. He visited the country several times, and formed further musical relationships with the pianist Sviataslav Richter and composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Our Archive has a fascinating wealth of information relating to this remarkable period in Britten’s life, and in political history, including letters to and from the Soviet Ministry of Culture, music manuscripts, and Peter Pears’ vivid travel diaries to Moscow.
