Honouring the Legacy of the 453rd Bomb Group and the Mighty Eighth

Located at Old Buckenham Airfield, the 453rd Bomb Group Museum preserves the history of Station 144, home to the 453rd Bomb Group of the US Eighth Air Force. With an extensive collection of artefacts, documents, and memorabilia, the museum tells the story of the airmen who flew B-24 Liberators from this Norfolk base during the final months of World War II.

The museum is complemented by the 8th Air Force Heritage Gallery, which showcases a wider collection dedicated to the bomber and fighter groups of the Mighty Eighth, including a large display on the 452nd Bomb Group at Deopham Green.

Description

History

From December 1944 to May 1945, Old Buckenham Airfield was home to the 453rd Bomb Group, part of the Second Air Division of the US Eighth Air Force. The group carried out strategic bombing missions over Germany and occupied Europe, playing a crucial role in the final phase of the war.

The museum, housed in original wartime buildings, is dedicated to preserving their history and also highlights the wider story of the US Eighth Air Force, the largest aerial striking force of WWII.

A recent addition is the Second Air Division Heritage Gallery, which tells the story of the 14 B-24 Liberator Bomb Groups that formed this division. This collection, based in Swaffham, includes uniforms, flying equipment, historical documents, and photographs, giving visitors an in-depth look at the personnel and aircraft of the Second Air Division.
