Preserving the Legacy of the 96th Bomb Group in Norfolk

Once a key USAAF base during World War II, Snetterton Heath was home to the 96th Bomb Group, part of the Eighth Air Force. From this Norfolk airfield, the group carried out over 300 combat missions, flying B-17 Flying Fortresses deep into enemy territory. Today, the 96th Bomb Group Museum stands as a memorial to the airmen who served and sacrificed, preserving their stories for future generations.

History

Built in 1942, RAF Snetterton Heath became operational in 1943 as home to the 96th Bomb Group, consisting of the 337th, 338th, 339th, and 413th Squadrons. The airfield played a crucial role in strategic bombing missions, targeting industrial sites, airfields, and military infrastructure across Nazi-occupied Europe.

The 96th BG flew over 8,000 sorties, earning two Distinguished Unit Citations for their actions. Their most notable operations included bombing Munich, Berlin, and vital German supply lines.

After the war, Snetterton Heath was decommissioned, and much of the site was repurposed, eventually becoming the well-known Snetterton Circuit, now a hub for motor racing. Despite these changes, the heritage of the 96th BG remains, with a dedicated museum and memorial to their service.
