City of Norwich Aviation Museum
Preserving Norfolk’s Rich Aviation Heritage
Located on part of the former RAF Horsham St. Faith airfield, now Norwich Airport, the City of Norwich Aviation Museum is dedicated to preserving the region’s extensive aviation history. The museum houses a memorial to the 458th Bomb Group, whose personnel flew from this site during World War II, alongside exhibits on the USAAF 8th Air Force and the wider history of aviation in Norfolk.
History
Originally built as RAF Horsham St. Faith, the airfield served as an 8th Air Force base during World War II, home to the 56th Fighter Group, 319th Bomb Group, and 458th Bomb Group. The 458th Bomb Group flew B-24 Liberators from this base, carrying out strategic bombing missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. Today, a memorial and display dedicated to the 458th BG can be found in the airport terminal.
Although much of the original airfield has been redeveloped into Norwich Airport, some wartime buildings remain, now converted into housing off Fifers Lane. The museum, located north of the airport, continues to preserve and present Norfolk’s aviation heritage, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the area’s wartime and post-war aviation history.
