Beach huts on Southwold beach

East Anglia Spotlight: Southwold, Suffolk

Whether you love swimming or shopping, coastline walks or cosy pub, Southwold on the Suffolk Coast really has it all. We love this quintessential English town and think it deserves a place on your bucket list!

Where to go

Southwold Pier

Why not start on Southwold Pier? Wander along the 190m board walk past fairground mirrors, stop off at the unconventional "under the pier show", pay a visit to the cafes and shops or just take in the stunning views along the coast from the end of the pier. Don't forget to hang around for the cheeky chimes of the mechanical water clock - it's a must see!

Top tip: The Harbour Ferry

Southwold to Walberswick foot ferry

Head towards Southwold harbour and catch the traditional foot ferry over to Walberswick, Southwold's neighbouring village. Here you will find great pubs for that spot of lunch, a gorgeous sand dune backed beach and by far THE best crabbing spots in East Anglia.

Where to eat

Southwold fish and chips

Well, it really wouldn't be fair to leave Southwold without sampling regions seafood, and what is better than fish and chips? You can  enjoy them at many of Southwold's pubs or straight from the paper whilst kicking back on the beach. Try The Little Fish and Chip shop on the high street or Sole Bay Fish Company on the harbour

If seafood isn't your thing, head to the Two Magpies Bakery on the high street for some delicious baked treats (the hot chocolate is especially good) or a few doors down, The Black Olive Delicatessen has an amazing selection of homemade pies with fillings that you have only dreamt of!

Top tip: The Adnams Shop

Adnams Shop Southwold

The building was designed to be as sustainable and environmentally-friendly as possible, so you'll find reclaimed wooden groynes and sustainably sourced timber throughout. There's a well-stocked tasting bar where you can try samples of the Adnams range, and don't hesitate to ask the staff for beer, spirits and wine advice - they are always happy to help.

A great place to relax and unwind, why not take a break in the café where you'll find tempting hand-made sandwiches, hot meals and freshly-baked cakes. They have also re-used some of the old copper brewing vessels as cosy 'snug' areas indoors and outside you can enjoy the sun in the Courtyard.
