The Gallery of Medieval Life: A British Museum Partnership

Showcasing over 900 treasures, with 50 on long-term loan from The British Museum, this gallery brings visitors closer to the lives of those people who lived in and around the Castle. From an ivory bobbin found in the Castle drains to elaborate scientific artefacts such as an astrolabe, the phenomenal range of objects date from the Norman Conquest through to the reign of Henry VIII. And, the space is simply stunning – with a breathtaking light sculpture suspended from the ceiling above, reimagining arches lost centuries ago.

Vibrant Colours

Prior to its transformation, Norwich Castle was one of many heritage sites that perpetuated the popular idea that old castles were all bare stone and cold floors. Informed by academic research, illustrated manuscripts and medieval churches and buildings across Europe, the Keep has been reinstated to a former splendour notable for its colourful palette and lush textiles. Cobalt blue, bright white walls, deep reds and greens bring the space to life.

Exquisite craftsmanship

Perhaps one of the most impressive facts about the project is the 30,000 hours spent by volunteers in creating a 19 metre long tapestry to adorn the King’s Chamber. Inspired by the legendary Bayeux Tapestry, this beautiful piece is complemented by other authentic, handmade textiles such as wall-hangings, costumes and banners. Throughout the spaces are other examples of artisanal skill – particularly the notable metalwork on the doors, recreated using the same techniques with which the originals would have been constructed.
